Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann Droichead Átha 2014

Drogheda Bids for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2018

Back in 2012, Drogheda Comhaltas teamed up with the wider community of Drogheda. We wanted to see whether it would be possible for us, working together, to bring Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann to Drogheda. Hosted by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann is the largest celebration of Irish music, language, song and dance in the world. It is estimated that Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann attracts over 300,000 visitors to the host town over the course of the festival and it culminates in peak numbers on the final weekend. It takes place every August and turns the host town into a colourful celebration of all that is good about Ireland.

Towns bidding for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann need to prove that they have all the necessary attributes:

  • Infrastructure: inc. venues for Socil Éigse, Competitions and Concerts
  • Transport: to move the hundreds and thousands of visitors around the towns during the Fleadh
  • Team: a dedicated local team on the ground to plan and manage all of the logistics and much more!

The Drogheda Bid Document and Event Management Plan that we created in 2012 is a complex and comprehensive document that clearly demonstrated to Comhaltas that we have thought through how the Fleadh would be managed here in Drogheda. Since our first bid back in 2014 we have continued to grow and strenghten these plans, our team and our resources - all of which have sincerely impressed the Ardchomhairle of Comhaltas.

The Drogheda Bid team are renowned for our resourcefulness and creativity. In our first bid the Ardcomhairle of Comhaltas were blown away by the colour, energy, vibrancy and community spirit that combined to create a really dynamic bid. We were never going to be awarded the Fleadh in our first year bidding but we made a really, really good first impression. It was hard for Comhaltas to see how the Fleadh would work in Drogheda as it is not a town that you normally associate with traditional Irish Music. So in our second year we turned Laurence Street into Fleadh Street for the visit by the Ardchomhairle. They got a great sense of just how it would look and feel to stage the Fleadh in Drogheda. Prior to that we planned and managed "Fleadh Factor" where we recruited 6 local celebrities to learn an Irish tradition in just 6 weeks before performing live on stage. Comhaltas never know what to expect next from Drogheda ... except that it should be good!

And so here we are - bidding for our fifth year, a pivotal year for Drogheda. We are competing against Cork for the honour of staging Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. We have worked hard over the last 5 years to build our team, to build our credibility and to build relationships with the key members of Comhaltas who have votes to cast on Saturday March 11th.

Please do what you can to support the campaign by liking Fleadh Drogheda on Facebook, following @FleadhDrogheda on Twitter and using the hashtag #FleadhDrogheda when you Tweet.

We are bidding to win. We want to win. We are humbly asking the Ardchomhairle of Comhaltas to vote for Drogheda. Drogheda would be an amazing host town for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2018 - all we need is the opportunity!
